Ellis WALLIS, son of John WALLIS (c. 1775-c. 1845) and Alice PEAKE (c. 1776-c. 1838), was born circa 1820 in South Lopham, Norfolk. He was baptised on 10 December 1820 in South Lopham. He was attested into the military on 3 October 1838 at Quiddenham, Norfolk - into the Coldstream Guards, Private 2363, from South Lopham, a labourer, aged 17y 9m. Ellis, a sergeant, was part of the Garrison of the Tower of London in 1851. He served in the “East” for over 2 years which was in the Crimean War where he was at the Siege of Sebastopol (Oct 1854 - Sep 1855). After his discharge he had been a permanent member of the 7th Surrey Rifle Volunteers rising to the rank of Sergeant-Major. He died on 27 January 1881 in Sunninghill, Berkshire. He had his estate probated on 4 March 1881 in Oxford, Oxfordshire - “WALLIS Ellis. 4 March. The Will of Ellis Wallis formerly of 2 Hall’s-place Kennington-lane in the County of Surrey Sergeant-Major in the 7th Surrey Rifle Volunteers but late of Sunninghill in the County of Berks Innkeeper who died 27 January 1881 at Sunninghall was proved at Oxford by Mary Ann Wallis of Sunninghill Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Personal Estate under £400.”
